Herons Vs. Herrings: Your Response.

Esteemed friends, I know you are all on the edge of your seats wondering which team is winning, Herons or Herrings. Well I can tell you, as it stands the Herons have it 6 - 0. I’ve sent it out to a random heron supporter, so if you’re team Heron and you sent in your address keep an eye on the post in the next few days. The Herring shirt will sit in my room, sullen and lonely lonely until someone wants it.

‘Dear Letty, thank you for your reply from which I glean you tend to favour the Heron am I correct? You’ve solved for me two problems “Which is best, a Heron or a Herring?” and “What is the difference been a Heron and a Herring?” There was a boy in my class called Mark Heron obviously we called him Mark Herring. My thoughts following your comments are a flock of Herons would be hideous whereas a shoal of herrings pretty - from a distance. Love the Art’ - Anon

Dearest Anon, 

You have exposed something I tried to conceal, I do have an anti-Herring bias. The thing is, I really don’t like fish. I have nightmares about them. But don’t let my prejudice put you off, under the right circumstances they do have many useful qualities. 

I’m glad I helped you establish the difference between herons and herrings, they should never be confused as they’re deadly rivals and would not thank you for it.

That would be a pipe. The most common way to eat herring is smoked, and this herring wants to make a point: he is not afraid of fishermen or what they might do to him, so he smokes a pipe. It’s a statement, a challenge, a way of saying ‘smoke me if you dare.’

I do believe you are right, especially as herrings have no legs, a distinct disadvantage on the catwalk.
